Spain recognizes Scientology as of Public Benefit by Registering its Foundation

MADRID, December 9, 2015 – With the Order ECD / 2637/2015 of 23 November, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, logs in its Registry the Foundation for the Betterment of Life, Culture and Society. By doing so, the state is recognizing that the aimes of the Foundation are of what they legally call “general interest”, which means that they are for the public benefit. This step means for Scientologists in Spain and in Europe the recognition of humanitarian task being carried out for more than 35 years in Spain. The President of the new Foundation, Ivan Arjona said that “we have for many years dedicated our effort to helping society in many ways, so the work is not new, but we take this new phase with great enthusiasm to improve the quality and amplitude of our help to the whole Spanish society”.

The foundation will promote among other things, knowledge and defense of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; within its projects, will create a Contest of Journalistic Stories on Tolerance and Respect for Human Rights with prizes, and intends to prepare and launch a Master Degree on Human Rights, “we have already started contacts at the university level and the initiative is being received very well” Arjona said.

Among other things, it will also host lectures on promoting tolerance and even the already recognized award “Religious Freedom Award”, which in its first two editions have rewarded people of the stature of Professor of Ecclesiastical Law Dionisio Llamazares, the Department of Ecclesiastical Law of the University of León, specialist on religious freedom and Technical Adviser of the General Directorate of Religious Affairs Ms. Mercedes Murillo, among others.

Having partnered with other entities such as the United Social Action Platform, the foundation volunteers participate in delivering sandwiches on a monthly basis to people who are looking for work, and also delivered the famous book “The Way to Happiness” by L. Ron Hubbard as a common sense guide to better living, which served its author to receive the recognition from the Guinness World Record as the world’s most translated author.

The Foundation for the Betterment of Life, Culture and Society, registered under No. 1780 of the Registry of Foundations of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, has the purpose, as established by statutes:

“The promotion, dissemination and defense of human rights enshrined in the Spanish Constitution and in the Universal Declaration and related treaties. The promotion of the teachings and practices of Scientology as developed by L. Ron Hubbard, and its applications for the improvement of individuals and society. Promoting and encouraging tolerance in all aspects of social life and the removal of barriers and difficulties in this area”.
